Introduction

Kristin Finn was inspired to write her first book after searching for practical information and guidance on managing her disorder ─ from preconception through postpartum. Fortunately, she kept a detailed journal, and is able to share her insights written from the unique perspective of someone who lives with a medical illness, particularly bipolar disorder.

Kristin was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was nearly seventeen after very turbulent and frightening years that began in her early teens. After graduating from Western Michigan University cum laude, she worked in sales for Xerox Corporation, then for a major pharmaceutical company, and currently works as a successful investment advisor. Kristin is an advocate for those affected with bipolar disorder and their families. She is an active member of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) Speakers Bureau. She passionately believes that she has a manageable and treatable illness, and her goal is to reduce the social stigma of “mental illness.” Kristin enjoys a happy marriage and two beautiful daughters.

Kristin’s fifteen-year-old daughter, who also has bipolar disorder, has committed herself to helping others by sharing her ongoing struggles and triumphs. Mother and daughter are working together on a future book, and are available for speaking engagements and to conduct seminars. The Finns believe bipolar is a family issue, and Kristin’s husband and younger daughter have agreed to share their views of the impact the illness has on a spouse and sibling. Mood disorders have a significant influence on many facets of daily life and family interactions; there is great value in hearing from the “silent” family members.
